Nya had barely eaten in three days. When Lori came back to the house with the children the next day, she didn’t even come out of the room. If there was one thing her husband did she was grateful for, it was for the excuse that she was sick and extremely contagious. She did not have to face Lori in her condition or provide an explanation for it. Nya said her goodbyes to her adoptive mother through the door, as she faked being half asleep from medicine. Lori was not usually that complacent, but Adam must have used some sort of magic that let her go peacefully. As she fed Leah her bottle, Nya wondered how she could get out of her situation. Her right eye was almost shut to the point where she could barely see out of it. Nya could still feel the three or four lumps that had emerged from her head after being in contact with Adam’s fist.

She had screamed for help when Adam drug her into the house, but of course no one came to her rescue. Nya knew no one would hear her pleas for him to stop with the music blaring. She barely knew her neighbors anyway; Nya couldn’t really say that anyone would have to come to her rescue. Adam never owned up to his whereabouts the night of their anniversary. You would think after getting my butt whooped, a confession would have been my consolation prize. As soon as I can get out of this house I have to find a job. I don’t care if I have to work three jobs, I will do what I need to. I hate him.

Nya began crying uncontrollably. The phone rang for what seemed like the 100th time today. The caller ID read “Meagan Jones”. It was unlike Nya and her best friend to stay mad at each other for too long; Meagan was probably attempting to call a truce. She was always the peace maker between the two. Nya didn’t want to talk to her. Meagan would know, as she always did, that something was wrong. Meagan begged Nya not to go back, now look at her. Beaten and broken. Nya didn’t want to isolate herself from the world, however, right now she just needed to heal, tend to her children and make a plan.
